Nowadays more and more people are suffering from yeast infection. Yeast infection is one type of fungal infections. It is caused by fungi and not life- threatening. But, yeast infection affects human skin, mainly in the vaginal region of women. It also causes itchiness, redness and discomfort which is really annoying and embarrassing. In fact, there is no cure for yeast infection. So, people have to live with it. And, yeast infection can develop further infections. Thus, you should know how to prevent and deal with it.

What is yeast infection?

Many yeasts live in human body. Some yeasts are beneficial. Others are harmful. When yeasts grow out of control, it causes harms. Also, these yeasts are considered a fungal form or systemic fungal infection where bacteria develop extended root type structures and become invasive. Yeast infections is caused by Candida Albicans. It sometimes affects the vaginal area. Some skin areas of dentures, breasts, abdomen, nail beds, and skin folds can be infected, too. Yeast infection is commonly found in women. In particular, more than ¾ women experience vaginal yeast infection at least one in their lives. Yet, men can get genital yeast infection.

It is difficult to identify yeast infection symptoms. Because patients often looks very healthy outside. In addition, yeast infection symptoms sometimes make people confuse with other kinds of fungal infection. In fact, there are some visible signs commonly found in yeast infection patients:

In women, yeast infection causes

  • Pain, itching
  • Burning in or around the vagina,
  • Vaginal burning upon urination
  • Painful intercourse
  • Pain or discomfort in the vagina during sex
  • Skin fissures or sores
  • Rash
  • Vaginal discharge
  • Redness
  • Swelling

In men: redness, irritation, itching and discharge at the head of penis.

Causes of yeast infection

There are many reasons for yeast infections.

–           Imbalance in body: People have problems with their health, which can weaken immune system and make imbalance in body. For example, pregnancy or hormone therapy can also cause yeast infection. It is because of the high estrogen levels. Also, some health problems, including diabetes, HIV infection, can increase your chances of getting yeast infection.

–           Wrong personal hygiene: Fungi and bacteria develop and grow well in warm, moist environments. However, many women do not keep their vagina clean and dry, which creates a convenient condition for yeast infection works. Moreover, some people use strong cleanser for hygiene, which kills “friendly bacteria” and creates good conditions for harmful fungi attack and cause itchiness.

–           Unsafe sexual intercourses: yeast infection is not a sexually transmitted disease, but people having sex have more chance to get this condition.

–           Other reasons: using too much contraceptives or overusing antibiotics.

In some mild case, yeast infection can be treated easily by home remedies. They are Tea tree oil, Boric acid, Yogurt. And, yeast infection patients can use antifungal creams or suppository to remove infection. They can also have medication treatments.

In some cases, yeast infections go away on its own. Then, it can come back. It certainly depends on how you treat your body. The preventions really play an important role in dealing with yeast infection. Here are some tips to prevent your yeast infection.

1. Take care of your vagina

Yeast infections commonly occur in vagina. It is because of the damp environment in vagina which can boost the rapid growth of Candida Albicans. So, you should:

  • Keep your vagina clean and fresh.
  • Wipe from front to back when bathing
  • Clean the inside folds of vagina when bathing.
  • Dry your vagina after taking a shower.
  • Do not use strong cleanser for your vagina
  • Wear cotton underwear

    2. Have a balanced diet

Yeast infections grow well on sugar. So, you should limit foods containing too much sugar like processed grains, sugary desserts and soft drinks.

Also, you can eat yogurt or foods containing lactobacillus. Because it may low pH in the vagina, which can prevent Candida overgrowth.

  1. Do not overuse antibiotics contraceptives

If not necessary, you should use antibiotics or contraceptives. Because these drugs can change the normal balance of vaginal organisms. Thus, they can boost the growth of yeasts.

  1. Suitable clothing for yeast infection

  • Keep things loose (avoid tight pants, skirts, jeans)
  • Change your underwear often
  • Change out your wet cloths
  • Wash underwear in hot water
  1. Avoid unnecessary chemicals

Women should limit using some hygiene products, including douches, sprays, and lubricants. Because not many of them are safe. They may kill beneficial bacteria and even produce harmful ones causing yeast infections.

Yeast infection is rarely dangerous, but annoying. When you suffer from this condition, it is really embarrassing and irritating to cope with. So, you should apply some preventions to lower your risk of getting yeast infections.
